Introduction

The Junior Section was formed in 1984 at a time when few players were coming through from George Heriot's School and the Club's 2nd XI occasionally had difficulty in raising a full XI. Starting with an Under 15 XI, the Junior Section added an Under 18 XI and an Under 13 XI within a few years and now caters for all age groups from age 10 upwards.

The aim of ensuring a healthy flow of players from the Junior Section into the senior Club has been successful with a senior 3rd XI added in 1991 and a 4th XI in 1994 and former Junior members can now be found in all three XIs currently run by the Club.

Over the years the Junior Section has met with success at all age levels and a number of players have had the honour of representing both the East District and Scotland at Youth levels.

Apart from playing League and Cup matches organised by the Lothian Junior Cricket Development Group and Cricket Scotland, the older members of the Junior Section are encouraged to turn out for the Club when school commitments allow and to continue to play the game when their school days are over.

Whilst the majority of members of the Junior Section attend George Heriot's School, the Junior Section, like the senior Club, is open to all children, irrespective of the school they attend.

Safety Guidance on the Wearing of Cricket Helmets by Young Players

Coaches, managers, players and parents/guardians should be aware of the following safety guidance which applies to all young players up to the age of 18:

- helmets with a faceguard or grille should be worn when batting against a hard cricket ball in matches and in practice sessions

- young players should regard a helmet with a faceguard as a normal item of protective equipment when batting, together with pads, gloves and, for boys, an abdominal protector (box)

- young wicket keepers should wear a helmet with a faceguard, or a wicketkeeper face protector when standing up to the stumps

The original guidance allowed parents or guardians to give their written consent to allow a young player not to wear a helmet. Parental consent not to wear a helmet is no longer acceptable in any form of cricket.

In addition, any young player in the Under 16 to Under 18 age groups must wear a helmet and, for boys, an abdominal protector (box) when fielding within 6 yards (5.5 metres) of the bat, except behind the wicket on the off side.

No young player in the Under 15 age group shall be allowed to field closer than 8 yards (7.3 metres) from the middle stump, except behind the wicket on the off side, until the batsman has played at the ball. For players in the Under 13 age group, the distance is 11 yards ( 10 metres). These minimum distances apply even if the player is wearing a helmet. Should any young player come within the restricted distances, the umpire MUST stop the game immediately and instruct the fielder to move back.
