Season 2010
Saturday 28 August
Arbroath United v Heriot's
Sadly, having led the Division for most of the season, Heriot's fell at the final hurdle, losing to Arbroath by 3 runs.
Early reports back to Goldenacre had suggested that things were going well with Arbroath struggling at 117 for 7, but in the face of a good late order partnership Heriot's were unable to finish the job and Arbroath escaped to post 179 for 9 in their 50 overs.
In reply, Heriot's lost Mathew Thomas and Adam Lockhart-Krause early and it was necessary for Skipper Steve Knox and Gavin McIntyre to steady the ship with a good partnership. Unfortunately, Knox's dismissal for 44 was followed immediately by that of pinch-hitter Sean Weeraratna and so run rate had become something of an issue.
Despite another good innings from Gavin McIntyre (57 not out) and support for Anthony Edington (24) Heriot's fell just 3 runs short, finishing on 176 for 8.

Heriot's 2 v Murrayfield DAFS
The 2nd XI finished what has been a dismal season with a 99 run defeat at the hands of Division leaders Murrayfield DAFS.
Heriot's made early inroads in to the Murrayfield DAFS batting thanks to Curtis Liebeck's 3 for 31 and at one time looked capable of containing the opposition to a respectable score. However, once Murrayfield DAFS took the attack to the Heriot's bowlers in the second half of their innings they were able to post the challenging total of 227 for 6 wickets.
Sadly, Heriot's were unable to mount a challenge with Colin Thomson top scoring with 54 as Heriot's were bowled out for 128.

Heriot's 3 v Penicuik 3
The 3rd XI ended their season with another comfortable win to cement their position in Division 6 next season.
All of the Heriot's bowlers enjoyed success as Penicuik were bowled out for 77. Craig Watson confirmed his development into a good all-rounder with another unbeaten innings whilst Paul Acheson entertained with some authentic cricket strokes before playing over a full length ball to leave Chris Palmer to block the first three balls he received before despatching the next three for boundaries with powerful drives.

Saturday 21 August
A good week-end for the Club with all three teams winning their matches for the first time this season.
Penicuik v Heriot's
Heriot's duly kept their Division 1 title asperations alive with a comfortable nine wicket win over Penicuik. However, despite Arbroath United's tie with Stirling County today, the Division 1 title will go to whoever wins next Saturday's match between Arboath United and Heriot's.

Heriot's 3rd XI V Glenrothes 2nd XI
A win against bottom team Glenrothes was imperative if Heriot's were to avoid relegation from Division 6 of the East League.
Batting first, Glenrothes struggled to get the ball off the main square for most of their innings in the face of accurate bowling from Heriot's seam attack of Stuart Ogilvie, Craig Watson, Calum McDougall, James Mildred and Jason Lewis and the off spin of Adam Bennett. Despite having wickets in hand they left their effort to post a good score until the final few overs and were foiled by a good catch at mid on from Darryl Turner to leave Heriot's with 89 runs to win.
Heriot's openers James Mildred and Ali Hogarth were unable to impose themselves on the Glenrothes opening bowlers and when Ali Hogarth and Adam Bennett each fell to catches behind the wicket when chasing wide balls and James Mildred was bowled through the gap before the total had reached double figures, the winning post looked some way away.
Calum McDougall got the scoreboard ticking with some lusty blows but when he fell to a thick edge to point and Jason Lewis was bowled trying to repeat a lusty hit to the mid wicket boundary Heriot's were five down for less than 40 runs.
Stuart Ogilvie joined Craig Watson and the pair batted sensibly, seeing off the opening bowlers and gradually imposing themselves on the change bowlers. Craig in particular impressed with several lofted straight drives whilst Stuart confirmed the progress he has made this season as Under 15 captain by defending well when required and putting away the bad balls. An unbeaten stand saw Heriot's home with five wickets in hand. Well done boys!

Heriot's v Poloc
An emphatic 180 run win over Poloc maintained Heriot's hopes of winning the Division 1 Championship and it now looks likely that the spoils will go to the winner of the match between Arbroath United and Heriot's at Arbroath in a fortnight's time.

Not for the first time this season the Heriot's bowling attack did the business, dismissing Drumpellier for 116 runs. There are few opening batsmen in Scottish cricket better equipped to chase down modest scores than skipper Steve Knox and his 62 not out paved the way for a comfortable victory to re-establish Heriot's at the top of Division 1.

Heriot's v Stenhousemuir
For the older members of the Club who remember Stenhousemuir as one of the top clubs in the East District in the 1950s and 1960s it was sad to witness the extent of their decline as Heriot's brushed aside their challenge to remain at the top of Division 1 of the SNCL.
Batting first, Stenhousemuir offered some resistence at the top of the order but with Andre van Neikerk ( 4 for 47) returning to form after a few quiet weeks and good support from the ever reliable Anthony Edington and Mathew Thomas, Heriot's were able to expose the tail and on his return Sean Weeraratna's pace proved too much as Stenhousemuir were dismissed for 141.
Skipper Steven Knox ( 65 not out) gave a masterclass in knocking off the runs when chasing a modest total and Mathew Thomas (43) proved to be Stenhousemuir's only success as Adam Lockhart-Krause (20 not out) partnered the skipper to a comfortable win.

Heriot's batted first on a damp wicket but despite the efforts of Adam Lockart-Krause (79) and Gavin McIntyre (55 not out) were only able to post the modest total of 204 for 6 wickets.
Missing Sean Weeratna, Raja Javed and Jamie Innes who has finished his season, Heriot's bowlers were unable to make an early breakthrough and as the wicket dried out batting became easier and Stoneywood - Dyce eased home for the loss of 5 wickets, thereby ensuring that the race for the Division 1 title is likely to go down to the wire.

Mid-season Review
The 1st XI top Division 1 of the SNCL at mid-season, having lost only one match by a small margin. Availability has not been as good as one would like or expect from a 1st XI and whilst this has given opportunities for players in the lower XIs to experience 1st XI cricket, it has meant that the 2nd and 3rd XIs have struggled to field settled sides.
Whilst the 3rd XI has been able to call on youngsters from our vibrant Junior Section and have done well to currently lie 6th in Division 6 of the East league, the 2nd XI is currently propping up Division 2 of that League and needs another couple of wins before the end of the season if they are to avoid relegation for the second year running.

SNL - Heriot's v Falkland
Heriot's consolidated their position at the top of Division 1 of the SNL with a hard fought win over Falkland.
Batting first, Heriot's posted the challenging total of 220 for 8 with Sean Weeraratna (65) continuing his good form with the bat with good support from captain Steve Knox (47) and from Gavin McIntyre and Anthony Edington, each with 26.
Missing Jamie Innes and Andre van Neirkerk from their full bowling attack, Heriot's struggled to make inroads into the Falkland line up with their pro compiling an impressive 111 not out at number 3. They were always struggling to match Heriot's run rate, however, and in the final push for points perished at the hands of Mathew Thomas who finished with the match winning figures of 5 for 30.

Scottish Cup - Uddingston v Heriot's
Batting first on a good wicket and fast outfield, Heriot's were unable to make the start they would have liked, losing 5 wickets within the first 20 overs. Sean Weeraratna (83) and Chris Goddard (26) set about the recovery and with tail enders Colin Thomson, Paul McCraw and Andre van Neirkerk all making useful contributions, Heriot's were able to post a total of 208 all out.
Uddingston openers took the attack to Heriot's from the outset, scoring at over 8 runs per over in the first 5 overs and forcing the removal of Paul McCraw, Sean Weeraratna and Mathew Thomas from the attack. Anthony Edington and Andre van Neirkerk steadied the ship, sharing three wickets, but a good fifth wicket stand looked to have left Uddingston with little to do to achieve a comfortable victory. However, Sean Weeraratna and Mathew Thomas were able to break the partnership and Heriot's came close to pulling off what would have been a remarkable recovery with Uddingston squeezing home by one wicket in the last over of an exciting match.

Scottish Cup 2nd Round - Heriot's v Aberdeenshire
Expectations of a good run in the Cup were dampened with the unavailability of batsmen Steven Knox and Qasim Ashraf and bowlers Anthony Edington, Andre van Neirkerk and Raja Javed but thanks to an excellent knock from Gavin McIntyre (57 not out and support from Chris Goddard (38) Heriot's were able to post a total of 154 for 6 in their 35 overs.
Following a loose first over from Sean Weeraratna which went for 14 runs, openers Jamie Innes and Sean Weeraratna settled into a good rythm, sharing three early wickets and bringing the required run rate back under control. The introduction of left arm spinner Mathew Thomas saw the run rate dry up at one end and when 2nd XI skipper Stephen Wallace bowled the dangerous Neil Macrae, Heriot's were well on top.
Occasional bowlers Chris Goddard and Calum McDougall bowled well to their field and with the assistance of two smart run-outs from wicketkeeper Adam Lockhart-Krause Aberdeenshire were bowled out for 129 to complete a very satisfying team win.

Inmans Edinburgh v Heriot's 3rd XI
As stated in last week's match report, the ability for the 3rd XI to compete successfully is very much dependant on the availability of players throughout the Club. The loss of three 3rd XI players to the 2nd XI on Friday weakened the side and skipper Charlie Clark was indebted to Juniors Ali Thornton, Callum Dutia and Ben Watson turning out at short notice to enable the side to field a full complement of players.
Batting first, Inmans were reduced to 33 for 4 thanks to good opening spells from Jason Lewis and James Mildred. Unlike recent weeks, however, the back up bowlers were unable to continue the good work and with the help of a couple of crucial dropped catches, Inmans escaped to 192 all out.
In reply, Heriot's openers Ian Slessor (42) and Ali Hogarth (32) put on 62 for the first wicket, but apart from Paul Acheson (24), none of the remaining batsmen were able to keep up the pressure and Heriot's were bowled out for 150, 42 runs short.

Batting first, only Adam Lockhart-Krause (55), Gavin McIntyre (22) and Sean Weeraratna (32) were able to reach double figures but opening bowlers Sean Weeraratna and Raja Javed (3 for 33) were able to make early inroads into the Stenhousmuir line up and, as he has done regularly all season, Mathew Thomas (4 for 9) rapped up the innings in quick time.

Dunfermline Wanderers v Heriot's 3rd XI
Heriot's won the toss and opted to field on a very warm day. Our bowling and fielding was superb with all the bowlers contributing well and given great back up in the field which led to Dunfermline being dismissed for 84 runs. Senthal Arumugan and Jason Lewis were the pick of a good bowling performance.
Unfortunately, Heriot's batting remains a problem and despite welcome contributions from James Mildred and Daryl Turner, Heriot's found themselves 9 wickets down and still three runs short of the target. Fortunately veterans David Sawyer and Ali Hogarth saw the side home with some calm batting.
Heriot's MVP - James Mildred and Daryl Turner.

SNL - Heriot's V Stoneywood-Dyce
Heriot's duly chalked up their third League win in a row, but not without a few concerns.
Missing skipper Steve Knox, Heriot's batted first on a dampish wicket and whilst most of the top order got themselves in, no-one was able to push on to a big score. A key moment came in mid innings when having dismissed Sean Weeraratna and Jed Case in successive balls, the Stoneywood-Dyce's in-swing bowler saw his hat-trick ball to Anthony Edington dropped in the slips, with Anthony going on to add a valuable 30 runs and give Heriot's a total that they were subsequently able to defend.
Anthony rounded off a good day with 3 for 38, assisted once again by left arm spinner Mathew Thomas's 3 for 44 as Heriot's squeezed home by 10 runs.

2nd XI v Marchmont
Marchmont 224 Heriot's 130
3rd XI - Largo v Heriot's
Heriot's batted first and with good contributions from Fraser Suttie (36), Senthal Arumugan (35), Rod Petrie, Charlie Clark (26) and Iain Slessor, posted the useful score of 168.
In reply, Largo made a good start but Heriot's clawed their way back into the match with good bowling from David Sawyer and Senthal Arumugan and vital catches at crucial times. Largo were reduced to 140 for 8 but Heriot's were unable to finish off the job and Largo ran out winners in the 44th over by two wickets.
This was the third match in a row in which the 3rd XI had opportunities to win, but failed at the final hurdle. However, confidence remains high that if availability is good throughout the Club, the 3rd XI can still challenge for promotion.
Heriot's MVP - Senthal Arumugan

Ayr v Heriot's
Labelled by the Press, somewhat prematurely, as a League decider, featuring the two teams relegated from the Premier Division last season, Heriot's were grateful to their bowling attack who dismissed Ayr 15 runs short of Heriot's modest total of 143 runs on what was by no means a poor batting surface.
Whilst it is to be hoped that our batting will improve in the weeks to come, it is reassuring to know that our bowling attack is capable of bowling sides out for modest totals and it was good to see new overseas amateur Mathew Thomas hit the ground running with 4 for 37 and Jamie Innes following up last week's good performance with another in his 3 for 8.

2nd XI
Leith FAB v Heriot's
Batting first, Leith were able to amass 221 runs all out despite the best efforts of Raja Javed (3 for 20). In reply, Heriot's could only muster 131, with Toby Hardwick (38) and Raja Javed (36) top scoring.
3rd XI
Heriot's v Clackmannan County
Heriot's won the toss and elected to bat on what was a good batting strip. Regrettably, some very poor shot selection led to the side being bowled out cheaply for 94 runs.
Fortunately, the side bowled much better than it had batted and at one stage had the opposition rattled at 44 for 5 wickets thanks to fine bowling from Akshay, David Sawyer (2 for 22) and Senthal Arumagan (2 for 20), backed up by some tight fielding. However, 94 was a difficult total to defend and Clackmannan eased home with 4 wickets in hand.
Heriot's MVP was David Sawyer.

1st XI
Falkland v Heriot's
The 1st XI got off to the start they were hoping for with a six wicket win at Falkland thanks to an outstanding performance by last season's most successful bowler Andre van Neirkerk (5 for 14) who was instrumental in dismissing Falkland for 72 runs on a wicket that suited his bowling perfectly.
Skipper Steve Knox (33) saw the side home with something to spare, but for the loss of 4 wickets.

2nd XI
Heriot's V Kismet
The 2nd XI's first fixture was against an unknown quantity in Kismet who have progressed through the East League over the last few years. They had beaten a Grange XI in a cup game the previous weekend, chasing down 240 runs at Raeburn Place.
Heriot's won the toss and elected to bowl first on a moist wicket on a bitterly cold day. There were a few guys playing their first game for the 2nd XI, notably Curtis Leabeck, Danny Goodrem and Jason Lewis. Stephen Wallace and Curtis opened the bowling and restricted the opposition to 2.5 runs per over for the loss of one wicket after 15 overs.
Some woeful fielding and loose bowling contributed to Kismet going on to post an impressive 257 for 4 with their No. 3 batsman scoring 96.
Faced with a challenging total, it was important that Heriot's made a good start but openers James Mildred and Toby Hardwich were both out for ducks and Gur Singh made it three. Tino Weereratna came in to steady the ship and posted a rapid 25, but star of the Heriot's innings was an impressive 89 from Alan Hogarth who in true 'nails' fashion appeared to benefit from being struck in the face by a bouncer. Alan was given good support by Darryl Turner who struck his maiden boundary for the Club and having got the taste for it, proceeded to find the boundary a further three times.
Regrettably, these were the highlights of the Heriot's innings and we were all out for 178.
Although there were a few positives to be taken from the match, a much improved fielding performance is essential if the 2nd XI is to be competitive in the remainder of the season. A stronger XI is available for this week's match versus Leith.
3rd XI
Boroughmuir v Heriot's
Bearing in mind that the team had only ten players, and had none of last year's promising schoolboys, they played with a lot of spirit and never gave up.
The side started well with the bat with Don Chapman and Harry Wright putting on 90 runs for the first wicket. Unfortunately the side could not capitalise despite Fraser Suttie's 30 at No.4 and were bowled out for 154.
This was a reasonable score at 3rd XI level and with an economical opening spell from Harry Wright and three wickets for fellow opener Tony White prospects of a good start to the season were on the cards. Unfortunately the support bowlers were unable to subdue the Boroughmuir batsmen and they eased home with 4 wickets in hand.
Heriot's MVP was Harry Wright.
